Venture capital investment in clean technology investment hit its highest point in 2006, as investors poured $2.9 billion into start-ups, according to data from the Ann Arbor, Mich.-based industry tracker, the Cleantech Venture Network. The 2006 total is a 78% increase over the 2005 investments totaling $1.6 billion and a 140% increase over 2004 investments of $1.2 billion.

About $613 million was invested in cleantech in the fourth quarter of 2006, a 22% increase over the $502 million investors put into new companies in the fourth quarter of 2005. Energy-related investments accounted for $2.1 billion, or 74% of the total, with large investments in bio-fuel companies and new solar technology developers dominating the category.

Investments in technology companies tackling recycling and waste totaled $192 million and investments in clean transportation technologies reached $164 million, indicating growing interest in other cleantech segments according to the industry tracker.
