Google Voice for iPhone, Gmail Users, and Android

Soon Google Voice will be available within the Google Apps Suite. It will just have a long beta period with the general set of Gmail users before going to the paid services.

The Wall Street Journal recently posted an article on Google Voice called “Google Voice: A Dutiful but Klutzy Secretary.” This is a fairly good article which shows that Google is offering voice transcription for free which others charge $3.99-$329 a month for. Courtney Banks questioned if the service will receive mass adoption in the market place. I think you are going to see more Google products inside more phone services. T-Mobile plans to sell a home phone early next year and also a tablet computer, both on running Android. Below are additional details on Google Voice from the Wall Street Journal.

Google Voice is like having your own personal switchboard operator and a dutiful but klutzy secretary. However, if you don’t have phones literally dropping out of your pockets, the total switchover to Google Voice may be more trouble than it’s worth. Many people, myself included, won’t be too keen to take on yet another new phone number, train people to call them on it, and remember to dial the extra digits to make outgoing calls (so the Google number will register on the recipient’s caller ID).

I think Courtney will enjoy having the ability of keeping a NYC area code if she happens to move to another state. Once you have a number from Voice, you don’t have to switch. This is similar to getting your own domain name and email address rather than using a free email service provider. Yes this is only available to @gmail users now but will be available to GApps for domains soon.
